Unemployed men of America

Today in the US approximately 13% of men from 30 to 55 years old are unemployed, while in the 60s this rate was only 5%. Surely they have not heard the term “sponger”, they consider themselves as voluntary unemployed. They are men from thirty to fifty, they are full of strength and unwillingness to work. At the same time they are not rich, but there are already millions of them. The appearance of a new layer of unemployed in the society of workaholics aroused keen interest of sociologists. Where did these people come from?

As statistics show, today in the US approximately 13% of men from 30 to 55 years old are unemployed. At the end of 60s this rate was only 5%. Most of them do not even have a high school diploma. But their ranks accept more and more people with higher education.

“For 30 years I’ve been an unskilled worker at a metallurgical plant. I earned $50,000 per year. That’s not bad, but we worked 40-50 hours a week. I will never work in such conditions”, says Alan Beggelow of fifty three years old.

In fact, if Alan Beggelow had not been dismissed, he would have worked at the plant as usual. But as heavy industry floated away to Third World Countries, the Americans lost well-paid jobs, which also provided them with health insurance. Today it becomes more difficult to find such a position. For some time Alan worked as a teacher in a local technical training college, then the rates were also cut off. He finds working as a seller in “McDonalds” beneath his dignity. How do he and his wife live then? They borrowed money in the bank on security of their house. Each year they spend $7,000 of family savings and have only $60,000 left. “If we are totally short of money, if we will not be able to live without earnings, I will find something, some full-time or part-time job. But it will never be something that characterizes me as a personality”, says Alan.

But what characterizes him then? “Nobody values my work, - says Alan Beggelow, - but I learned to value my spare time”. What does he do all day long? Firstly, he sleeps more. According to statistics, this group of population spends in bed 80 minutes more than those who have to rush to work in the morning. That is why Alan Beggelow plays the piano for two hours. He reads two or three books per week, writes detective novels himself, but nobody published them yet.

“Yes, there are periods, when I want him to look for a job. After all, I search all the time. But I enjoy seeing the pleasant face of my husband, and I’m not going to force him to do anything”, explains Kathleen Beggelow of forty seven. She worked as an unskilled labourer at a small factory till car accident. Disability pension makes $1,000 per month. Besides Kathleen earns additionally: she makes and sells cookies, sews for the neighbours. According to statistics, men do not cook biscuits, but live on welfare.

They are not simulators, their invalidity is not invented. Backaches, weak heart, mental diseases can really take place. But most of the symptoms would not stop these people, if they were offered well-paid job. Today there are 6,5 millions such people in the USA. In 1990 there were twice less. Rose, the neighbour, thinks of them: “I did not marry just to support a man financially. I want him to support me, otherwise I don’t need him. I can support myself without a husband. When once he gives up his work, we will part.”

The status of men who live at wife’s or girlfriend’s expense is very unstable. Working women often leave them. No wonder that 60% of voluntary unemployed men do not have family or are divorced or have never been married.

At the end it should be added that the so called “lost generation” of men exists not only in America, but also in developed European countries and in Japan. As representatives of the stronger sex leave army of labour, more representatives of the fair sex flow into it.
